Some examples of lost legacies

A Mrs A from east London along with her late husband had bought their council flat under the right to buy scheme and the 25 year mortgage was finally paid. When Mr A died he left a life policy of about £50,000 which gave Mrs A an estate of about £275,000 which she wanted to leave to their only son who was married with two children. This she did but, unfortunately, and obviously unknown to her, the son prematurely died without a will and the inheritance Mr and Mrs A had worked so hard for passed to his widow. Later the son’s widow formed a relationship with another man who had children and she remarried. That hard earned inheritance of Mr and Mrs A was now redirected totally away from her son and grandchildren which was her bloodline.

A widower Mr W in his will left his estate to his divorced son the inheritance being a house and other assets worth £500,000. Although divorced the son had not completed financial arrangements with his ex-wife and 50% of Mr W’s estate went to his ex-daughter-in-law when this was finally agreed.

Debbie left her estate to her children David and Rebecca. They found the probate system rather difficult to handle and hired a solicitor to manage it for them and his fees came to £12,500.

Gill’s daughter Alice owned a business for several years which was successful. Because of the economic downturn the business was badly affected and closed down. Several years later Gill passed away leaving her estate to her daughter hoping she would now have long term security. Unfortunately Alice’s old creditors came forward and claimed the inheritance to clear her debts. Everything Gill had worked and hoped for had gone.
